Reception for Fine Tooth: The Art Of Dental Adornment

RUBY Projects and Pablo Cardoza Gallery are proud to collaboratively present "Fine Tooth: The Art of Dental Adornment", an innovative exhibition redefining the boundaries between traditional and contemporary art forms, exploring the intricate nexus of dentistry and art through the dazzling world of dental decoration.

Fine Tooth transforms Pablo Cardoza Gallery into an arena where ancient practices meet modern aesthetics in dental adornment. Visitors will journey through time, from the use of precious metals in ancient dental practices to the stylish statements made by modern-day grills. The exhibition features an array of artistic expressions including sculptures that honor ancient traditions, photography that captures the vibrancy of grill culture, and unique jewelry pieces inspired by orthodontic appliances which highlight the transition of braces and aligners from functional devices to ornate artworks.

In its first of 5 exhibitions exploring adornment in medical fields and fine art, Fine Tooth showcases a diverse lineup of artists from around the globe, each contributing their perspective on the cultural significance and aesthetic evolution of dental adornments. These works encourage visitors to contemplate the transformative power of these interventions, which have evolved from mere aesthetic enhancements to powerful expressions of personal and social identity. This conversation extends to challenge and expand the conventional definitions of both "fine art" and "jewelry," sparking dialogue about beauty standards, status symbols, and the role of adornment in contemporary society.

As guests meander through the gallery space, they are invited to interact with the artworks, allowing the gleam of gold grills and the intricacy of orthodontic patterns to inspire thoughts about self-discovery and expression. Each piece serves not only as a testament to individual creativity but also as a mirror reflecting broader human experiences and cultural narratives.

Exhibition Details:
Pablo Cardoza Gallery, 803 William St Unit 3 77002
May 17th 2024 through June 30th, 2024
Sat-Sun 1-6pm or by appointment

Fine Tooth promises to be a thought-provoking exploration that not only celebrates the historical and cultural significance of dental adornment but also repositions it within the contemporary discourse on fine art and identity, craft and medical necessity, art history and anthropology.

ICONIC: Julia McLaurin

RUBY PROJECTS PRESENTS

ICONIC

b y J u l i a M c L a u r i n

RSVP HERE

ICONIC is a series of ceramic emojis, large scale food, and digital images by Julia McLaurin, all unpacking our modern obsessions with internet culture, the language and nuance behind iconical aspects of society like emojis, memes, e-celebrities, and the impact of social media. Through a playful critique of our digital world, McLaurin's work provides icons, perhaps effigies, reflecting the aire of religiosity around our preoccupation with pop culture. The exhibition opens February 3rd, 2023, with a reception from 6-9 pm, and will run through March 18th, 2023.

Julia McLaurin is an artist, photographer and sculptor based in Houston, Texas. Born in New York, she moved to Texas at the age of 5, creating at a young age through the Glassell School of Art in Houston. While she obtained an undergraduate degree and Masters in Psychology and Biology at the University of Texas and the University of Houston, McLaurin always found herself drawn into art and visual expression.

McLaurin experiments with photomontage, enhanced by her formative training in 4-color printing processes, as well as her true passion--ceramics—combining vintage and modern imagery with whimsical and fantastical ideas. She draws inspiration from the playful, while also pulling from iconography and Western pop culture. McLaurin is passionate about bringing the beauty of the world from the mundane, into to the surreal.

McLaurin, her husband and three children still call Houston home.
